1Hill End Historic Site
Hill End boomed after payable gold was discovered nearby in mid-1851, and by the height of the second rush in 1872 it was the largest inland settlement in colonial New South Wales, with an estimated 8,000 residents. Gazetted a historic site in 1967, it joined the NSW State Heritage Register in 1999.
2Golden Gully and Archway
Worked intensively after the 1851 gold rush, this gully was dug by European and Chinese miners sinking shafts, adits and drives for alluvial gold. Their fossicking, combined with erosion, sculpted dramatic spires and arches. It joined the NSW State Heritage Register in 1999; its Grand Arch collapsed after heavy rain in November 2021.
3History Hill Museum
History Hill is a privately run museum sitting 1.5km north-east of the Hill End Historic Site. It displays over 10,000 gold rush and colonial-era artefacts, from stamper batteries and steam engines to Chinese and convict relics, and includes a purpose-built 175-metre underground mine, "The Son of Hope," recreating goldfield life from 1851 onwards.
